Abstract

Metabolic syndrome (MS) remains one of the most pressing multidisciplinary problems in contemporary medicine, combining abdominal obesity, arterial hypertension, atherogenic dyslipidemia, and impaired glucose tolerance on the basis of insulin resistance. The study of MS among working-age individuals belonging to organized occupational groups — whose activity is associated with elevated physical and psychoemotional demands, irregular work schedules, and sleep disturbances — is of particular scientific importance. This review systematizes current data on the prevalence, pathogenesis, comorbid conditions, and clinical and preventive determinants of MS in this population group. The prevalence of MS among this contingent is shown to be comparable to general population figures, at approximately 21%, although the spectrum of associated conditions has a distinct profile, dominated by post-traumatic stress disorder, sleep disturbances, cardiovascular disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
